The essence of Personal Leadership is self-knowledge. As a coach, it is always good to practice what you preach. That is why I decided to train and swim a 6K freestyle race, as to set a goal and to train hard for a period of eight months. It was a tough challenge. I learned a lot about my coaching methods and myself. That is why I repeated it in 2016 with a quarter triathlon and 2018 with half a marathon.
In 2014 I decided to take a sabbatical for a year. I took the opportunity to step back and review my life. How do I feel? Is this what I want? Do I want to make changes? I sailed twenty thousand miles from Barcelona to Brisbane, Australia. It has been a great adventure and challenging journey. If you are interested to read more about my (mental) experiences, go to the King’s Legend website. I am currently writing a book about this trip and my journey.
Connection, values and beliefs. This is the heart of the matter. It motivates and steers you in life, in your (sports) career. It makes you tick. It answers questions such as why me? What is my strength? What do I stand for? What is my course in life? Based on the answers, you can define your own route to leadership.
The Myers Briggs Type Indicator ® are one of the tools I use. MBTI® is based on Jung’s theory of personality types and their preferred lifestyle. I use it in coaching through a questionnaire and coaching sessions. Get to know yourself better; get to know your type. To give you a short impression, you can do the simplified test on this site. Other elements of my coaching toolbox are: Neurolinguistic Programming, Transactional Analyses and Family/Organization Constellations.
